NICK HANNES

Nick Hannes graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Ghent in 1997. After working as a photojournalist for 8 years, he comitted himself to longterm documentary projects, often with a social or political relevance. In 2006 he left for a one year round trip through the 15 former Soviet republics, carrying only a bagpack and a camera. His first book Red Journey deals with the transitional phase in post-Soviet society. Red Journey laid the foundation of Hannes’ distinctive photographic style, in which humour and ambiguity play a prominent role.

His second book Tradities, published in 2011, turned his ironic gaze to popular traditions and party culture in his homeland.

By that time he had already started ‘Mediterranean. The Continuity of Man’, an epic project that involved twenty trips to the Mediterranean countries over four years of time. Published in 2014, this series juxtaposes parallel realities and paradoxes of the Mediterranean region, focusing on various contemporary issues such as mass-tourism, urbanization, migration and crisis in twenty countries.

His facination for artificial urban development lead Hannes to Dubai, where he is currently working on a new project about consumerism and recreation.

Hannes exhibited at Thessaloniki Biennial for Contemporary Art, Museum of Photography (Antwerp), Bozar Centre for Fine Arts (Brussels), Flanders Center (Osaka, Japan), Breda Photo (Breda, NL), Centro Andaluz de la Fotografia (Almeria, Spain), Kaunas Photo (Lithuania), Photo de Mer (Vannes, France), Foto Festiwal Lodz (Poland), PhotoMed (Sanary-sur-Mer, France), Head On (Sydney), Athens Photo Festival amongst others.
